Maintaining Dental Health

Everyone is taught of dental health importance and necessity of proper tooth care - in the first place of regular tooth brushing and flossing as early as in the early childhood. Mouth is full of bacteria which can damage tooth structure what most commonly results in the development of caries and consequently of severe toothache which does not go away without visiting a dentist.

The very basic in maintaining dental health is regular tooth brushing and flossing. However, sometimes brushing teeth twice a day and removing food and dental plaque with a floss is not enough. Many people are not aware that frequency of tooth brushing alone is not all that counts, while excessive brushing can even damage the protective layer on teeth and gums. The majority of dentists recommend to brush the upper teeth downward and lower teeth upward twice a day for two minutes using soft or medium hard tooth brush. Damage to the gums can be also inflicted in improper use of dental floss. The American Dental Association advices to curve the floss into a C shape against the tooth and wipe it from the gum to the tip.

Brushing and flossing the teeth might be the most crucial in tooth care but dental health maintenance does not end here. Like on the teeth the bacteria are also present on the tongue and can cause a bad breath and sometimes even various oral diseases. For that reason tongue should be cleaned as well regardless if with a special tongue cleaner or a tooth brush. However, next to proper oral hygiene one should also give up unhealthy habits such as smoking cigarets which are most frequently the cause for yellowing of the teeth. Harmful effects on dental health have also foods high in sugar which lower the pH levels of saliva and increases its acidity.
